The Wolves
On Isla de Lobos off the ocean coast of Punta del Este there is one of the largest colonies of sea lions in the world. Two species coexist on the island: Fine or two-haired seals (Arctucephahus australis) and Sea Lions or one-haired ( Otaria Flavescens)
Fine wolf
It is gray in color, with some silver or reddish on its back and orange-gray on the belly. It has 2 layers of hair. The babies are black until their first molt, when they acquire a light gray color. They present a marked sexual dimorphism, the males have longer and more abundant hair on the neck, they are larger than the females, measuring almost 2 meters and weighing approximately 160 kg, while the females measure 1.50 and weigh about 50 kg.
The fur seal colony is not migratory, it remains and reproduces throughout the year. It feeds on fish, cephalopods, crustaceans, lamellibranchs and marine snails. They occupy rocky and steep areas on the Island.
Sea lion
The name comes from its thick neck and mane on the male’s head. They are yellowish brown with a large, flat snout. Their babies from birth to the first month have black fur. The males weigh between 300 and 350 kg and measure 2.60 m, while the females weigh 150 kg and measure 2 m. long. The female has a smaller head, while young males resemble it before their mane grows. The offspring in their hair and size are similar to the females, although with larger heads.
Not all sea lions migrate, only the males retreat to the sea for a time at the end of the breeding period. They feed on crustacean fish and mollusks.
Lions and sea lions cohabit peacefully since they do not feed in the same places and have reproductive cycles that do not overlap.
